Why your skin gets darker during winter and avoid it

Have you noticed how your skin darkens or your skin tone becomes uneven during the winter months? This is because the drop in temperatures harshly affects your skin.

If you think summer is the only season that gives you a sometimes unwanted tan, think again.

Most people think that during winter, skin only becomes paler and drier. Although this is the case for some, those of us who have oily skin, experience the exact opposite. The changing seasons can damage your skin which is why it is important to understand exactly what happens to it during the seasonal changes.

So what exactly happens?

During winter, the cold temperatures prevent the skin from secreting its natural cleansing oils which are essential for a healthy glow. As a result, acne breaks out on the skin.

Here’s how you can prevent your skin darkening during winter:

Do not rinse your face with hot water. In light of weather temperatures dropping, you may feel the urge to make your bath water hotter than normal. Rather, have a bath or a shower with cold or lukewarm water. Apply Vaseline petroleum jelly to your face and body afterwards to deeply moisturise your skin.

Keep your body hydrated. Drinking coffee, soda or fruit juice does not count towards your recommended daily water intake. Drink lots of cleansing water as much as your body requires, to internally flush your system and to restore your skin's natural glow.

Cut down on junk food. It’s normal to crave a delicious burger every now and then, but having them in excess can damage your skin. Eat fruit, nuts, vegetables and proteins as often as you can, instead.

Exfoliate once or twice a week. Exfoliating is a good way to remove dead skin cells, impurities and rejuvenate the skin. Combine a teaspoon of brown sugar and a dollop of Vaseline petroleum jelly for an inexpensive and easy way to deeply restore your skin. Remember to use a moisturiser after exfoliating or your skin may be left dry or tight.

Caring for your skin is something that should be done not only during winter but during the other seasons as well. Remember that having a good skin cleansing routine should not have to cost you a lot of money or require much of your time. So with this in mind, ensure that you add it to the top of your priority list.
