Many of us love the initial effects that the sun has on our skin. It leaves us looking tanned which makes us look healthier and gives us a sultry, summer glow. But the sun also has damaging and ageing effects on our skin, which makes a tan seem a lot less appealing. Luckily, there are many products that are on offer that mimic a natural looking tan and result in glowing, healthy skin.
Follow Vaseline’s tips below on how to achieve a perfect, natural looking sunless tan. Before using any tanning products, it is essential to do a patch test 24 hours before you use the product to ensure that you don’t have a reaction to the chemicals.
Exfoliating your skin properly before applying a self-tanning product is essential. Doing so will remove any dead skin cells and allow for a streak free, even tan. You can also make your own scrub by mixing some brown sugar with some Vaseline Petroleum Jelly: Original BLUESEAL
After you’ve dried your skin, apply a little Vaseline Petroleum Jelly: Original BLUESEAL
to your knuckles, elbows, knees and ankles because these areas tend to be drier than the rest of the body and absorb a lot of colour from the tanner. By coating them in a light, protective film, they won’t take on an unnatural orange hue.
Apply your tanner in a cool, dry place and in front of a full-length mirror. Starting at your feet, apply a generous amount of tanner (streaks occur when you don’t use enough product) to your whole body using long, even strokes. If you start on the upper body, you’ll risk getting creases on the stomach when you bend over to apply tanner to your legs.
Allow the tanner to dry at least 15 minutes before getting dressed. Avoid tight fitting clothing, exercise and contact with water for at least eight hours, and it is best to wear loose fitting, black clothing. This is the time that is necessary for the product to develop. When you next get into the shower and rinse any surplus product off, you should emerge with gorgeous, glowing and healthy skin.
Prolong your tan by limiting your shower time to 10 minutes and reapply the self-tanning product every second or third day to keep your tan looking fresh. It is important to remember that self-tanners don’t contain an SPF, which is why it’s essential to protect your skin with a medium to strong SPF sunscreen if you’re planning on spending the day outside.
