Know Your Skin Type
Knowing and understanding your skin type is essential when it comes to caring for your skin accordingly. It’s also worth remembering that lifestyle plays a big part in the health of our skin. Good habits like regular exercise, drinking enough water, healthy eating and getting sufficient sleep all contribute to having healthy skin. Once you understand your skin type you will be able to care for it with the right skincare products and lifestyle choices.
Skin falls into four general categories, namely: Normal, Dry, Oily, and Sensitive. Each skin type has its own unique characteristics that require specific skincare products to address a particular concern. Dry, oily, and sensitive skin is not just confined to the face; it can affect the body as well. With the right skincare products, diet and lifestyle choices, you can enjoy healthy skin all over your body.
Normal skin generally has a healthy, vital appearance which is characterized by clear, blemish-free skin. It is neither particularly dry, nor oily and is not sensitive towards products or temperature extremes. A lightweight moisturiser like Vaseline Aloe Soothe
will moisturise the skin leaving it feeling light and fresh.
Oily skin is prone to breakouts and blackheads, and is characterised by a shiny appearance. Interestingly enough, oily skin affects more men than women. On the body it is most common on areas like the back and chest, often resulting in minimal to severe breakouts.
Dry skin lacks moisture and very rarely suffers breakouts due to a lack of sebum. You can identify dry skin by how easily it burns in the sun and/or if it is has a tight, sometimes itchy feeling that occurs after cleansing. Due to dehydration, fine facial lines are often visible around the eyes, mouth, forehead and chin whilst on the body dry skin is most visible on the knees, elbows and hands. It is imperative to regularly apply a good body lotion to counteract flaky skin.
Sensitive skin can affect any area of the body and can feel dry and tight. It has a tendency towards redness, itching and burning and is very sensitive to temperature extremes, spicy foods, sun exposure and alcohol. Interestingly enough, one can develop skin sensitivity at any stage in life. This skin type cannot tolerate sun exposure and needs to be cared for with specialized skincare products to avoid negative and painful reactions.
