Skincare Tips: A Little Help for Your Hands

Our hands are permanently on show. We use them to perform just about every daily task. It’s therefore surprising, how many women spend huge amounts of money on skincare products for their face and treatments for their hair, yet don’t give a second thought to caring for their hands.

Our hands are one of the first areas on our bodies to show the ravages of time. This is because the skin on our hands is much thinner than that on our face; therefore, it’s even more susceptible to the signs of ageing. There is also very little fat on the back of the hands, so when collagen and elastin fibres begin breaking down, it has a noticeable effect.

Coupled with the damaging effects of frequent washing and the constant exposure to the elements, one starts to understand why our hands require such special care.

Luckily, with very little effort, you can care for your hands and reverse any damage that has already been done.

Skincare Tips: A Little Help for Your Hands

  • Moisturise

The skin on your hands is more prone to dryness, so it’s essential to apply a good hand cream after every wash. Keep a hand cream in your bag, beside your bed and in your drawer at work to instantly eliminate dry skin. Vaseline Healthy Hand & Nail Cream is a non-greasy, conditioning moisturiser that is quickly absorbed by the skin and nails. It nourishes the hands, resulting in softer palms, fingertips and knuckles. It is also specifically developed to make nails 30 percent stronger while, at the same time, deeply hydrating the cuticles.

  • Scrub
Exfoliate your hands once a week with a gentle scrub. Make your own by mixing brown sugar with some Vaseline Petroleum Jelly: Original BLUESEAL and rub into the hands for two minutes. This will remove any dead skin cells, eliminate dry skin and ensure that the hand cream which you apply thereafter is properly absorbed and thus hydrates more effectively.
  • Protect
In order to prevent age spots, wrinkles and pigmentation on the hands, it’s important to protect them with sunscreen. Look for a hand cream with a built-in SPF, or apply a separate one that offers protection of at least SPF 20. The trick is to get into the habit of applying it every time you wash your hands. Invest in a pair of rubber gloves and wear them when cleaning up - household detergents can be very harsh on the hands, causing them to dehydrate.
  • Pamper
Treat your hands to a monthly manicure. Having a professional clean up your cuticles, shape your nails and paint them in a pretty colour will give you more motivation to care for them correctly. Give your hands a weekly intensive treat by coating them in Vaseline Petroleum Jelly: Cocoa Butter and placing them into a pair of plastic gloves for half an hour. This unique conditioning jelly cares for the skin while reducing dryness, ensuring that hands feel soft and look great.
